Modal has raised $750 million in Series D financing at a $15.75 billion post-money valuation, less than five months after completing a $355 million Series C at a $4.65 billion valuation. Accel led the latest round, with Kleiner Perkins joining and existing investors Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, Redpoint Ventures, Lux Capital, Amplify Partners, and Bain Capital Ventures participating.
The AI infrastructure company also said it recently crossed $1 billion in annualized run rate after growing more than 15 times year over year. Those figures were reported by Modal and have not been independently audited or verified. Even with that qualification, the financing highlights how rapidly investor attention is moving toward the infrastructure used to deploy models, run AI agents, and execute code at scale.
Modal More Than Triples Its Valuation in Five Months
Modal announced the Series D on October 14, 2026. The $15.75 billion post-money valuation represents an increase of approximately 239% from the $4.65 billion valuation set in May. It is also more than fourteen times the $1.1 billion post-money valuation attached to Modal’s September 2025 Series B.
The company’s disclosed financing history shows a similarly rapid progression. Modal raised $87 million in its Series B, $355 million in its Series C, and $750 million in the latest Series D. Based on company announcements, Modal has now raised more than $1.2 billion in total capital.
Modal has not announced an IPO filing, listing timetable, or other public-market transaction. The latest round instead provides additional private capital as the company expands its platform and workforce.
An AI Cloud Designed for Variable Workloads
Founded in 2021 by Erik Bernhardsson and Akshat Bubna, Modal develops cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-intensive applications. Its platform lets developers access CPUs and GPUs through code while Modal manages provisioning, scaling, storage, networking, and workload isolation.
Unlike a traditional cloud workflow that may require teams to reserve capacity and manage infrastructure directly, Modal emphasizes serverless, usage-based computing. The company says its capacity pool spans more than 20 clouds, allowing workloads to scale up quickly and fall back toward zero when demand subsides.
Modal supports inference, training, batch processing, notebooks, and secure execution environments. Customers cited by the company include DoorDash, Cognition, Ramp, Linear, Runway, Physical Intelligence, and Chai Discovery, although customer references do not disclose contract values or profitability.
Sandboxes and AI Agents Are Becoming a Larger Business
One of Modal’s most important products is Sandboxes, which provides isolated environments where AI agents can execute generated or untrusted code. Modal said the product has reached a $300 million annualized run rate and that the platform has launched nearly three billion sandboxes.
The company also said it can scale to one million concurrent sandboxes. These claims point to a growing infrastructure category beneath AI applications: models may generate plans and code, but they still require controlled environments in which to perform work.
Modal is also expanding in reinforcement learning, post-training, multi-node training, and model inference. That breadth could make the platform useful across multiple AI-development workflows rather than tying its growth to a single model provider or application category.
Why the Financing Matters for Private Market Investors
Modal’s Series D combines three characteristics that private-market investors often track: a large step-up in valuation, a substantial primary financing, and company-reported operating momentum. It also reflects continued demand for businesses that provide infrastructure to AI developers rather than competing solely at the application or foundation-model layer.
The transaction may provide a new reference point for other private AI infrastructure companies. At the same time, the speed of Modal’s valuation increase raises the importance of testing the durability, quality, and concentration of its revenue, as well as the capital requirements and gross margins associated with providing compute across third-party clouds.
Modal remains privately held, and the company has not disclosed complete financial statements, a share price for the Series D, profitability, or a path to an IPO. Private-company valuations can change materially between rounds, and private securities generally involve limited liquidity, restricted information, and long holding periods.
The Bottom Line
Modal’s $750 million Series D at a $15.75 billion valuation places the five-year-old company among the most highly valued private AI infrastructure providers. Its reported $1 billion annualized run rate and rapid adoption of Sandboxes suggest that execution environments for agents and elastic compute are becoming significant commercial categories.
For the pre-IPO market, the financing is a notable valuation and growth milestone, not evidence that Modal shares are available or that a liquidity event is imminent. Future investor attention will likely focus on whether Modal can sustain its reported growth while maintaining reliable capacity, security, and attractive economics at scale.
