Figure AI, an OpenAI-backed robotics AI startup, has unveiled humanoid robots capable of understanding voice commands and handling objects they have never encountered before. This breakthrough, powered by Figure’s in-house AI model, Helix, represents a major leap in robotics, particularly for real-world applications in both residential and commercial settings.
A New Standard in Humanoid Robotics?
In a recently released video demonstration, Figure showcased two humanoid robots responding to a voice command. A user unloading groceries from a bag instructed the robots.
According to Figure, this demonstration marks the first time two robots have collaborated to complete a task, an advancement in real-world humanoid robotics. The ability to handle “virtually any small household object” without prior exposure is a significant achievement in AI-driven manipulation.
Helix AI: A Leap Beyond OpenAI’s Models
Helix, the AI model powering these robots, combines vision, language comprehension, and movement control, allowing the machines to process complex tasks with contextual reasoning. Figure originally relied on OpenAI’s models but opted to develop its own system in-house, which founder Brett Adcock described as a breakthrough.
This shift underscores the increasing importance of generalist AI models in robotics, ones that can adapt dynamically rather than relying on preprogrammed instructions. In environments like homes, where variability is high, adaptability is crucial for success.
A Billion-Dollar Bet on AI-Powered Robotics
Figure is reportedly in talks to raise $1.5 billion, a move that would push its valuation to $39.5 billion, according to Bloomberg. The company is developing robots for both residential and commercial applications, aiming to create versatile humanoid workers for different environments.
The Future of Humanoid Robots
While humanoid robots are still a long way from matching human dexterity, Figure’s Helix AI marks a significant step toward making AI-driven robots practical for everyday use. As investments and advancements accelerate, the competition for dominance in humanoid robotics is heating up—bringing the industry closer to turning science fiction into reality.
