Gemini Models Now Natively Available on Databricks
Databricks has expanded its strategic partnership with Google Cloud to integrate Gemini 2.5 models directly into the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. This native integration enables enterprises to build and deploy AI agents on their proprietary data with strong security, unified governance, and no need to move data across systems.
Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash are now available to Databricks customers and support advanced capabilities such as multi-step reasoning and real-time natural language understanding. Customers will also gain access to Gemini’s new “Deep Think” mode and can operate models directly via SQL queries and API endpoints. Billing is managed through existing Databricks contracts.
Enterprise AI Benefits and Key Features
The integration is designed to address common challenges in enterprise AI deployments, such as fragmented tooling and operational complexity. Key benefits include:
- Native integration: Gemini models function as first-class products within the Databricks platform
- In-place inference: Models run on enterprise data without data duplication or external processing
- Unified governance: Managed through Databricks Unity Catalog for security, compliance, and responsible AI
- AI agents: Support for complex workflows, reasoning, and automation tailored to industry-specific use cases
This marks a major advancement in AI accessibility for Databricks customers operating on Google Cloud, where the companies have collaborated since 2021.
Databricks and Perplexity Co-Founder Launches Laude Institute
In a separate announcement, Databricks and Perplexity co-founder Andy Konwinski launched the Laude Institute, a nonprofit AI research organization funded with $100 million of his personal capital. The institute will fund foundational computer science research and promote AI projects with broad societal impact.
Its first major initiative includes a $3 million annual grant to establish the AI Systems Lab at UC Berkeley. The institute will back two types of efforts: “Slingshots” for early-stage research and “Moonshots” for long-term, high-impact projects.
Databrick’s Strategic Vision and Broader Impact
Together, these developments reinforce Databricks’ position as both a commercial leader in enterprise AI and a long-term supporter of academic and open research in the field. The company continues to bridge the gap between advanced AI tooling and responsible, scalable deployment—empowering organizations to unlock deeper insights from their data while fueling the future of AI research.
