Mistral Raises €3 Billion at More Than €21 Billion Valuation

French artificial intelligence company Mistral has raised €3 billion in Series D financing at a post-money valuation exceeding €21 billion, establishing a new funding benchmark for a European technology company.

Samsung Electronics led the round, with the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity serving as co-leads. The financing comes approximately one year after Mistral raised €1.7 billion at an €11.7 billion valuation, nearly doubling the company’s valuation in twelve months.

Mistral Completes Record European Technology Financing

Mistral announced the Series D on September 8, 2026, three years after the company’s launch. It described the transaction as the largest equity financing completed by a European technology company.

New investors included Advent, BlackRock-managed funds and accounts, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing investors participating in the round included Andreessen Horowitz, ASML, Bpifrance, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures.

Mistral said it will use the capital to expand its computing capacity, advance frontier-model research, build infrastructure, and accelerate international growth.

The company currently operates across 20 countries and says it supports more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. These operating figures are company-reported and have not been independently audited in connection with the funding announcement.

Samsung Combines Investment With Strategic Partnership

Samsung’s role extends beyond leading the financing.

The companies separately announced a strategic partnership focused on deploying Mistral’s technology across Samsung’s semiconductor operations. Samsung plans to use Mistral’s AI services and models to develop customized, on-premises systems for semiconductor engineering and manufacturing.

This combination of capital and commercial collaboration gives the round a strategic dimension. Samsung is both investing in Mistral’s growth and positioning itself as a customer and technology partner.

The partnership follows Mistral’s 2025 Series C, which was led by semiconductor-equipment manufacturer ASML. Together, the two rounds show Mistral attracting support from companies central to the global semiconductor and AI infrastructure supply chain.

Sovereign AI Becomes a Major Investment Theme

Mistral has positioned itself around sovereign and open-weight AI: technology that allows enterprises and governments to retain greater control over their data, models, computing infrastructure, and deployment environments.

That positioning has become more significant as organizations assess their dependence on a small number of American and Chinese AI providers. Data-residency rules, national-security concerns, regulatory requirements, and demand for customized models are increasing interest in locally controlled AI infrastructure.

Mistral’s approach includes open-weight models, enterprise products, computing infrastructure, and tools that allow organizations to deploy AI within controlled environments.

The Series D indicates that investors see potential commercial value in this model, particularly among governments, regulated industries, and multinational companies seeking alternatives to closed AI platforms.

Valuation Nearly Doubles in One Year

Mistral’s valuation has increased from €11.7 billion following its September 2025 Series C to more than €21 billion following the latest financing.

The step-up reflects strong private-market demand for AI companies with proprietary models, infrastructure capabilities, and enterprise customers. It also places Mistral among Europe’s most valuable privately held technology companies.

However, the valuation creates higher expectations for revenue growth, product adoption, and infrastructure execution. Training and operating advanced AI models requires substantial spending on chips, data centers, energy, and technical talent.

Mistral must also compete with larger AI developers and cloud platforms with significantly greater financial and computing resources.

What the Financing Means for the Private Market

Mistral’s Series D demonstrates how companies can reach multibillion-euro valuations and raise substantial institutional capital while remaining private.

The financing may support a longer private-company runway by giving Mistral additional resources to fund research and infrastructure without immediately pursuing the public markets. It may also establish a new valuation reference for European AI companies seeking late-stage financing.

Mistral has not announced a public IPO filing, listing date, or formal timetable to go public. Any discussion of a future IPO therefore remains speculative.

For private-market observers, the principal issues to monitor are Mistral’s commercial growth, infrastructure spending, enterprise adoption, and ability to differentiate its models in a rapidly changing market.

The Bottom Line

Mistral’s €3 billion Series D at a valuation above €21 billion is a significant milestone for both the company and the European technology market.

Samsung’s lead investment and accompanying operating partnership strengthen the financing’s strategic importance. The transaction also shows how sovereign AI, enterprise deployment, and control over data and infrastructure are emerging as distinct investment themes.

Mistral remains privately held, and the company has not announced an IPO plan. Its new valuation nevertheless places it firmly among the most closely watched late-stage private AI companies.
